You're Here... Now What?

Most people apply to the MPA program with the goal of eventually serving, strengthening and leading communities, whether this be through the government or nonprofit organizations. I'm here to tell you that this can be done while you are enrolled in graduate courses -- and after!

PASS

One opportunity to serve, strengthen, and lead is through involvement in the Public Administration Student Society (PASS). The Public Administration Student Society (PASS) is an organization that was created - and ran - by students to enhance their experience at NKU. All current MPA students as well as undergraduate public service minors in good standing are eligible to join. Members participate in community service projects and schedule guest lectures on topics of interest to MPA students. The group provides opportunities for networking and serves as an excellent resume builder! These skills are so important to have as you move to start or advance your career. PASS also completes one service event per semester, either on campus or in the NKY/Greater Cincinnati area!

PASS currently meets once per month. This month's meeting will be on September 20th at 5:45pm if you're interested! Please email me at adamsa54@nku.edu if you have any questions! PASS Interest Form

ICMA

Another fantastic opportunity, while not directly related to the MPA program, is the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). ICMA is the world-wide professional organization for local government leaders. Members of the organization have access to job boards, newsletters, online training, educational resources, and of course state and national conventions. Our chapter is the Cincinnati region's only, and Kentucky's second ICMA Student Chapter. This organization provides our students an opportunity for networking, internships, and employment. Students who join the student chapter receive a free membership to ICMA and all of the benefits of a regular paid member.

ICMA  has an event three times a semester and these include guest speakers from local government leaders, field trips to local government facilities, and networking events

If you are interested in joining, please email the Student Chapter President Pierce Turner (turnerp7@mymail.nku.edu) or the Student Chapter Faculty Advisor Dr. Darrin Wilson (wilsond32@nku.edu).

Pi Alpha Alpha

Pi Alpha Alpha is the Public Administration Honor Society. While this is an invitation only society, all MPA students who maintain a 3.7 GPA through 18 credit hours are eligible to join. Membership into this society provides opportunities for networking and job seeking resources. If and when you are eligible to join, you will be contacted!
